California lawmakers allow gay marriage

by Derek W. on September 7th, 2005

An AP story out of Sacramento is reporting that the California legislature has approved a bill allowing so called “same sex” marriages.

But as the article notes, celebrations by gay activists may be “short-lived”:

The legislation could be vetoed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has expressed an acceptance of gay marriages but said it’s an issue that should be decided by voters or the courts.

Yes, you just read that correctly. Schwarzenegger believes gay marriage is an issue that should be decided by the voters or the courts.

“He will uphold whatever the court decides,” spokeswoman Margita Thompson said Tuesday after the state Assembly approved the same-sex marriage measure, 41-35. The Senate had approved it last week.

And we all know how dependable the courts are these days. Perhaps celebrations by pro-marriage activists at the probable veto of this bill are the ones that are really “short-lived.”
