Pat’s rat-a-tat-tat

by Jarret M. on August 24th, 2005

So Pat Robertson thinks we should knock off Hugo Chavez and said so on the 700 Club yesterday.

Damage control on-deck.

Pat, I’m not going to rap on you too much, but seriously… what could compel you to say such a thing? It’s not that I’m against assassinations, its just that I’m against broadcasting damaging messages to all the nations in the world, not to mention making yourself an impromptu laughingstock. It doesn’t matter if the American public has thought through the idea of taking Chavez out- they don’t make such decisions. Leave it to the trained bean-counters in the military and the executive branch to think such things through. They have no doubt considered every option for every case years before you ever thought of it.

It’s statements like these that will hurt the overall reputations of Christians, especially those of you who lean towards the conversative side (don’t get me wrong- I’m a conservative, its just that I mix in an ample dose of libertarianism). The liberal media is having a field day with this. Not that the statement and idea shouldn’t be bashed and (publicly) rejected, but let’s try to work some subtlety in there, okay?

Pat seriously stuck his foot deep into his mouth this time.

Hugo Chavez is an out and out Communist, so I have absolutely no use for him, but on the other hand, I find it disturbing that a Christian would be calling for the assassination of anyone. It’s okay to complain about a Communist dictator, but definitely not a good testimony to say what he did.

Theologically unsound, I have to say. The Church is not given the sword, the government is and Mr. Robertson seriously needs to pick up his Bible for a little review before he starts going off like that. As a citizen, he should contact his senator or representative or talk to someone in authority about it. As a Christian, he must also emphasize the fact that Chavez needs God’s grace as much as we do.

Yes, I agree that Pat really stuck his foot in his mouth. However, in his defense:

If I’m not mistaken, liberal talk show hosts have suggested doing the same to our President before, and have gotton away with it. Also, someone had publicly suggested to Clinton that we “take out” Saddam Hussein, and there wasn’t a big fuss.

There’s obviously a huge double standard going on here. Pat’s being attacked just because he’s a Christian. And the way it’s portrayed, you’d think that he said it during a sermon or something.

On the other hand, it’s disappointing that Pat backed down and tried to change the meaning of his words by saying that he meant kidnap.

Hmm. I must say Alex has a good point.

“If I’m not mistaken, liberal talk show hosts have suggested doing the same to our President before, and have gotton away with it.”

I’d have to say that if liberal talk show hosts said that about our President tomorrow, I’d feel just as bound to single them out.

As I pointed out, one of the biggest problems with this whole setup is that Pat has given the liberal portion of the media a free pass to go on a rampage.

[...] Pat Robertson has recently gotten himself in trouble for suggesting that Ariel Sharon’s stroke was judgment from God and for calling for the assassination of Hugo Chavez. Now he’s in the news again, this time saying God has told him about storms and a possible tsunami in 2006. [...]
