Cindy Sheehan, TV Ads, and Free Speech
by Alex K. on August 22nd, 2005
Yes, Cindy Sheehan has TV ads now.
Mr. President, my name is Cindy Sheehan. On April 4, 2004, my son, Casey was killed in Iraq. He was only 24, and he died in his best friend’s arms. Casey was so good and so honest. Why can’t you be honest with us? You were wrong about the weapons of mass destruction. You were wrong about the link between Iraq and al-Qaida. You lied to us, and because of your lies, my son died. You said he died for a noble cause. What cause? Mr. President, I want to tell you face to face how much this hurts. I love my country. But how many more of our loved ones need to die in this senseless war? How many more soldiers have to die before we say enough? I know you can’t bring Casey back. But it’s time to admit mistakes and bring our troops home now. (Paid for by Gold Star Families for Peace)
Riigghht. “How many more soldiers have to die before we say enough”? As though the President were making sure enough troops die before pulling out. She’s said all this before, however, and the fact that she’s now saying it in paid commercials doesn’t make a huge difference. If you feel like getting that extreme adrenalin rush that results from observing particularly annoying liberals you can watch the ad here.
But the really interesting thing is that those who have refused to play this lovely message are being accused of suppressing free speech.
SALT LAKE CITY - A Utah television station is refusing to air an anti-war ad featuring Cindy Sheehan… KTVX said that after viewing the ad, local managers found the content “could very well be offensive to our community in Utah, which has contributed more than its fair share of fighting soldiers and suffered significant loss of life in the this Iraq war.”
Good for KTVX – even if they are an ABC affiliate. The local NBC affiliated station, however, played the ad without hesitation, and accused their competitor of quashing First Amendment rights.
The bigger picture is, by suppressing the message are we doing what is right under the First Amendment and in an open democratic society?
What ever happened to freedom of association?

Man, at the beginning you’re going “sniff…sniff” then she blasts the president. It’s like sugar-coated bush bashing. I do see pain in her eyes, but she’s gone overboard. Sugar-coated Bush Bashing…*groans*...

Wow… that was totally uncalled for. I can’t believe that stations are being accused of squashing free speech for not playing that! Oh my gosh I almost gagged at the end.

What was that all about come on! Iraq was never a mistake, it was never a mistake for us to step in!
